Reads: Central High Centennial Celebration 1885-1985. Features design of a tiger mascot with image of the school building in background. Central High School was the first high school for African Americans in Texas. Originally housed in rented quarters near 16th and Avenue L, it later moved to a frame building at 15th and Avenue N. In 1893, noted Galveston architect Nicholas Clayton designed an impressive brick structure for Central High School along Avenue M between 26th and 27th. This building was later razed when a more modern structure was built in the 1920s. The Colored Branch of Rosenberg Library was housed in Central High School from 1905 until 1959 when the main branch was integrated. The 1924 annex building still stands and today houses the Old Central Cultural Center. |
